Tigers sign Penny

According to Jon Morosi of FoxSports.com, the Tigers are "on the verge" of signing Brad Penny to a one-year, $3 million contract. Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the contract is worth the $3 million plus $3 million more in incentives.
Penny spent last season with the Cardinals but only went 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA before an upper back injury sidelined him for the season in May. The last time he threw a full season was in 2009 when he had a 5.61 ERA with the Red Sox. Penny will compete for the fifth starter spot with Armando Galarraga behind a rotation of Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello, Max Scherzer, and Phil Coke, who was in the bullpen last year and the only left-hander in the rotation.
